The Super Mario Bros Movie hits huge milestone at the box office
Universal Pictures, Illumination Entertainment and Nintendo must be very pleased as The Super Mario Bros Movie has become 2023's first release to smash its way to $1 billion at the global box office.
The movie has already been breaking records when it comes to top-earning video game films, but now Variety reports that the $1 billion milestone has been reached.
This means the movie has reached the record within 25 days, with The Super Mario Bros Movie released worldwide on April 5.

Mario and Luigi's adventures is set to have grossed $487.5 million by Monday (May 1) in North America alone and a further $533 million internationally.
Only four other movies have achieved this post-pandemic: Super Mario Bros will be joining Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion and Avatar: The Way of Water in this financial feat.
As far as box-office earnings go, The Super Mario Bros Movie has left other 2023 releases in the dust (so to speak), including Marvel's sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania which has made $474 million.
The movie stars Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day and Jack Black, who voice the iconic video game characters.

There are many reasons this movie has proved to be such a hit, despite not everyone loving Chris Pratt's casting.
There's the timing of the release being over the Easter weekend and then there's also the way the movie appeals to fans of all ages.
Once the movie is done raking it in on the big screen, it should be available to stream too.
The Super Mario Bros Movie is out now in cinemas.
