The Super Mario Bros Movie sets new record as it hits major box office milestone

The Super Mario Bros Movie previously nabbed the title of the highest-grossing video game movie of all time, and now, it's hit another milestone and set a new record.

Illumination's attempt at translating the adventures of the Mushroom Kingdom pals into a big-screen outing has crossed the $500 million mark at the international box office.

This makes the film the biggest English-language/Hollywood production of the year so far — even beating out Marvel Studios' first 2023 film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The only films standing in the way of The Super Mario Bros Movie being the overall biggest film of the year are the Chinese productions The Wandering Earth 2 and Full River Red.

Through incredibly strong box office performances in China (plus very limited international cinema runs), these films stand at $604 million and $673 million, respectively.

Considering that Mario's movie has only been out in cinemas for a week and a half, there's still potential for it to overtake them and snag the crown — although the film might need the equivalent of a mid-level power-up mushroom to do so.
