Super Mario Bros Movie's 'Peaches' song could be up for an Oscar

The Super Mario Bros Movie's breakout hit 'Peaches' could be up for an Oscar at next year's ceremony.

The song, which is sung by Jack Black's Bowser in the movie, sees the villain sit at a piano as he declares his love for Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) – and even has a hilarious music video featuring Black in a sparkly green suit and a striking red wig.

It has now been reported by Variety that the song is eligible to submit for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. Whether it will get a nod at the awards in 2024 remains to be seen in, but there's no doubt that Black performing the song at the ceremony would be ace.

The movie, which is based on the hit Nintendo franchise, hit the big screen last week, and has already broken a huge box office record by becoming the top global launch for an animated movie ever.

Within its first five days, it grossed $377 million worldwide, with $204.6 million in the US alone, beating Frozen II's record for biggest worldwide debut for an animated movie.

Despite its box office success, The Super Mario Bros Movie has had a decidedly mixed reaction from critics, and currently holds a 57% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In Digital Spy's three-star verdict, we said: "Whether The Super Mario Bros Movie is a genuinely good movie in its own right will be irrelevant for most fans.

"What it is is an affectionate big-screen replication of the Super Mario games, filled with so many nods that you won't even catch them on a second viewing. And that, for fans, will be a big wahoo."

While Entertainment Weekly suggested: "It's short, sweet, and over before anything can get annoying. But it's hard to escape the feeling, especially during the [...] Rainbow Road sequence, that you would probably be having more fun just playing a game together instead."

The Super Mario Bros Movie is out now in cinemas.
