‘Super Troopers 2′ Passes $2 Million Crowdfunding Goal

The Broken Lizard comedy troupe has surged past its $2 million crowdfunding campaign goal to raise production funds for “Super Troopers 2” in only two days.

As of 5 p.m. PDT, the Indiegogo campaign had taken in $2.14 million — thus assuring that the sequel will go into production this summer, 14 years after the original “Super Troopers” was released. The troupe said that Fox Searchlight had agreed to release the sequel if the $2 million goal was met.

The 30-day campaign could eclipse the $5.7 million record for crowdfunding for a film, set by the “Veronica Mars” movie on Kickstarter.

“Super Troopers 2″ reunites all five Troopers from the original film — Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske. The quintet play goofy Vermont state troopers with a penchant for pranks.

Pre-production on the film will begin in May, with principal photography starting this summer in the Northeast.

The campaign site said that if the goal was met, the troupe would rub the money all over themselves “just like Demi Moore in ‘Indecent Proposal.'”

“Then, we’re going to kiss each and every dollar bill,” they said. “Then we’ll fill a pool with the money and do backstrokes through it. Then we’ll bury the money and agree to tell no one about it. Then we’ll turn on each other and make accusations. Eventually, we’ll be forced to put the money in a bank. But once the money is safely in the hands of a responsible adult — our producer — every single dollar will go entirely to making a kick-ass movie.”

“Super Troopers” was made for $1.2 million and acquired by Searchlight at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. It grossed $23 million worldwide.

Broken Lizard also made 2004’s “Club Dread” and 2006’s “Beerfest,” which grossed $20 million. The troupe performed in “Broken Lizard Stand Up” for Comedy Central in 2010.
