Netflix might have been the home of superhero TV shows, but Amazon is hot on its heels with the dark and gritty The Boys.

The superhero series, created by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Eric Kripke, has become one of the most watched shows on Amazon Prime Video – and it's only been out for a couple of weeks.

Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, announced on Friday: "We are thrilled that The Boys have surpassed our predictions for viewing in its first two weeks, and has become one of our most watched Amazon Original series by our Prime Video customers.

"This creates great momentum and excitement for us as we get ready for season two."

The show is based on a popular comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, which sees regular people standing up to the terror of superheroes who go bad – and it's already been given the go ahead for season 2.

The Boys has a pretty impressive all-star cast too. Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings, Star Trek) leads up the band of vigilantes as Billy Butcher, while Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz) appears as the father of Hughie Campbell, who is played by Jack Quaid.

Jessica Jones' Erin Moriarty plays Starlight, Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl) is The Deep, and Antony Starr (American Gothic) is Homelander, the leader of an elite group of superheroes called 'The Seven'.

The Boys season 1 is now available on Amazon Prime Video.
