Swedish Novel ‘The Swimmer’ Floats With Kamala, Thunder Road, Film House Germany

Kamala Films, Thunder Road and Film House Germany has teamed to secure the rights to The Swimmer, the debut novel by Swedish author Joakim Zander. Ben August is set to write it. The novel weaves three international stories to create an action thriller that revolves around an American spy who abandoned his newborn daughter 30 years ago. He finds that she and her ex-boyfriend are in possession of dangerous information about American torture sites, with a Swedish lobbyist tracking them because the revelation would create an international scandal.

“With his first novel, Joakim proves that he is an immensely talented writer who understands the current international landscape told through the eyes of a politician, attorney and former military man,” said Kamala Films founder Marissa McMahon. Said Thunder Road’s Iwanyk, “The Swimmer mixes the moral complexity of le Carré with the globetrotting heroics of a Ludlum novel, all with an original voice.”

Kamala and Thunder Road are separately working on a biopic of slain war journalist Marie Colvin — Charlize Theron is attached — so this marks their second project together. August also scripted the upcoming Christopher Plummer starrer Remember; on which Christian Angermayer’s Film House Germany subsidiary Egoli Tossell is a co-producer. August is repped by ICM and Kaplan/Perrone. Erica Lee will oversee for Thunder Road. Sylvie Rabineau and Keith Fleer repped the author and his publishing agent Astri Von Arbin Ahlander.
