Today the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a baby boy, and the whole world waited what felt like a lifetime to see their first glimpse of the new prince.

As is tradition, Kate Middleton and Prince William stepped outside of the Lindo Wing for a few minutes to allow photographers and well wishers to see the Prince for the first time.

And as with previous years, the Duchess chose to wear a comfortable, bright shift dress for her first public appearance since giving birth for the third time. We applaud her for not wearing her PJs, because TBH that's the vibe we'd be feeling after a few hours in labour.

The dress was perhaps a sweet nod to Princess Diana, who also wore red when she appeared on the steps having given birth to Prince Harry. Some have also suggested that the colour choice might be in tribute to St George's Day.

In 2013 after giving birth to Prince George, Kate wore a blue polka dot dress by Jenny Packham, and people drew comparisons to the dress Princess Diana wore when on the steps having given birth to William.

Two years later, Kate wore another Jenny Packham shift dress, this one in a yellow floral design.
