Sylvester Stallone returns for Escape Plan sequel

It’s the sequel nobody wanted - ‘Escape Plan 2’ is happening.

According to Deadline, the upcoming ‘Escape Plan’ sequel will see Sylvester Stallone return to his original role… for reasons that aren’t quite clear.

“Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films has greenlighted a sequel to its 2013 film Escape Plan, with Sylvester Stallone prepared to reprise the role he played in the original, this time in a supporting capacity,” they revealed. “He starred in the original with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and it grossed $137 million worldwide.”

The original ‘Escape Plan’ was released in 2013… and despite a well of acting talent - including Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Caviezel, 50 Cent, Vinnie Jones, Vincent D'Onofrio and Amy Ryan - it didn’t do particularly well.

‘Escape Plan’ earned just $137 million at the box office on a budget of $50 million.

And critical reception was pretty mixed.

Aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes currently gives the movie a 48% rating… which actually isn’t too bad. But the general consensus seems to be that ‘Escape Plan’ is nothing more than a pale imitation of Stallone and Schwarzenegger’s ‘80s action hits.

“EFO co-founders/co-CEOs Randall Emmett and George Furla put this one together, and the company will sell foreign at AFM. Lionsgate Premiere will release domestically. Miles Chapman, who wrote the first one, is scripting the sequel.”

Will the ‘Escape Plan’ sequel be any good?

For now, we have to wait and see. But the real question is - will anyone care?
