Sylvester Stallone shares ‘very rare’ Rocky IV set photos to celebrate 40th anniversary of character

Sylvester Stallone has headed online to share a hoard of very rare photos from the set of ‘Rocky IV’ that show him getting pummelled by Ivan Drago himself, Dolph Lundgren.

This trip down memory lane not comes just a few months ahead of the 40th anniversary of the release of the original ‘Rocky’, but it also gives us fresh insight into the physical toil that went into creating the film.

As well as the above shot of Stallone and Lundgren fighting in the ring, Stallone shared this immediately impressive image of him getting a rib shot in during the bout:

But Stallone also took a hefty dose of punishment in the fight, too, as this fist to the throat proves:

While Lundgren’s sweat, blood, and tears were all beautifully captured in this close up of him receiving a blow to the chin:

Of course, this was all just part of movie magic, and Stallone made sure to share a picture of him talking through the scene with Lundgren, too, which he captioned with, “And finally planning the next round … he is one very large and powerful athlete!”

At the same time, Stallone uploaded some images of himself in the throes of directorial duties, the first of which he adjoined with the words, “Thinking about the next shot set up. I never saw this one either.”

While the one below provoked Stallone to admit, “Sometimes I really miss the process of directing.”

You can expect plenty more ‘Rocky’ memories to be revealed between now and December 3, which will mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the original film.
