The 2017 Academy Award nominations have been announced and, as expected, Damien Chazelle’s wonderful musical ‘La La Land’ leads the pack with a record-equalling 14 nominations, with ‘Arrival’ and ‘Moonlight’ just behind it with eight nods each. As ever many of the nominations were expected, with Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis all receiving acting nominations, but what about the surprises?
On Sunday, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in ‘The Revenant’, but he also made an appearance in 'Room’ - the film for which Brie Larson earned the Best Actress prize. A brief cameo from a young Leo was highlighted by A24, the studio that distributed Lenny Abrahamson’s magnificent book adaptation. A screenshot from the movie was posted on Twitter, with A24 pointing out that this marks the first time the Best Actor and Actress winners have appeared in the same film together, in the same year, since 1998.
2016 could finally be Leonardo DiCaprio’s year as he looks set to win a Oscar that’s evaded him his entire career. Fans from the Siberian region of Yakutia have been donating gold and silver valuables to be melted down into a statue for the ‘The Revenant’ star. It’s believed that around 100 people have donated their valuables (that’s a lot of dedicated fans!) to make the accolade and say it’s as valid as the Oscar he may or may not win.
