The 2017 Academy Award nominations have been announced and, as expected, Damien Chazelle’s wonderful musical ‘La La Land’ leads the pack with a record-equalling 14 nominations, with ‘Arrival’ and ‘Moonlight’ just behind it with eight nods each. As ever many of the nominations were expected, with Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis all receiving acting nominations, but what about the surprises?
Dave Jones and Hayley Squires in ‘I, Daniel Blake’, Eddie Redmayne in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’ and Viggo Mortensen in ‘Captain Fantastic’. This year’s BAFTA Film Award nomiantions have been announced and it’s packed with the big awards season contenders, including ‘Moonlight’, ‘Manchester By The Sea’ and, of course, the seemingly-unstoppable ‘La La Land’. BAFTA has always and will always, understandably, favour British films, so ‘I, Daniel Blake’ isn’t exactly a huge surprise.
On Sunday, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in ‘The Revenant’, but he also made an appearance in 'Room’ - the film for which Brie Larson earned the Best Actress prize. A brief cameo from a young Leo was highlighted by A24, the studio that distributed Lenny Abrahamson’s magnificent book adaptation. A screenshot from the movie was posted on Twitter, with A24 pointing out that this marks the first time the Best Actor and Actress winners have appeared in the same film together, in the same year, since 1998.
