Dafne Keen, the star of X-Men spin-off Logan, has signed up for the lead role in the BBC’s big budget adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials. Tom Hooper, helmsman of Oscar-winners including Les Misérables and The King’s Speech, is now on board to direct, according to Deadline, after working his scheduling around a forthcoming movie adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats. Keen will play Lyra Belacqua in the planned eight-part series, an orphaned girl brought up in an alternate version of Oxford, who comes into possession of a valuable instrument which can answer any question asked of it.

Actor, singer, ‘Hamilton’ creator, Academy Award-nominated songwriter and social media favourite Lin-Manuel Miranda let his followers in on Monday’s Oscar luncheon. The annual lunch honouring this year’s class of nominees, which also included many Academy members as guests, took place at the Beverly Hilton and beyond the usual group photo we don’t typically know much about what takes place there. Miranda had other ideas, tweeting his experiences with all the glee of a fan, or indeed a first-time nominee.
The 2017 Academy Award nominations have been announced and, as expected, Damien Chazelle’s wonderful musical ‘La La Land’ leads the pack with a record-equalling 14 nominations, with ‘Arrival’ and ‘Moonlight’ just behind it with eight nods each. As ever many of the nominations were expected, with Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis all receiving acting nominations, but what about the surprises?

Rob Marshall is directing Disney’s film, which will be set 20 years after events in the 1964 title. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the star and creator of Broadway’s hit musical Hamilton, is in talks to join Emily Blunt in Disney’s Mary Poppins sequel. Sources say the story will center on the now grown-up Jane and Michael Banks who have experienced a personal loss that results in the arrival of the magical Mary Poppins (Blunt).
