While chaotic action and sarcastic humor had a lot to do with Guardians of the Galaxy’s huge box office success, so too did its soundtrack, chockablock with old-school hits that underscored the film’s joyous, freewheeling energy. As evidenced by both of its trailers and at least one of its posters (see above), the highly anticipated Vol. 2, arriving in May, will embrace that same rock ‘n’ roll spirit — so it’s only fitting that various cast members have now each picked one song that they’d most want to contribute to an “Awesome Mix” tape compilation as part of the new Vol. 2 cover story for Empire (h/t Indiewire). At Empire‘s invitation, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Kurt Russell, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Elizabeth Debicki, Pom Klementieff, and writer/director James Gunn each select a beloved track that they’d include on an epic Guardians mix-tape.
Aside from a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in a sizzle reel shown at Comic-Con last summer, Sylvester Stallone’s role in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been shrouded in mystery. Directed James Gunn swung by the Yahoo Studios this week for a Facebook Live session to talk about both his new film The Belko Experiment (in theaters now) and the Guardians sequel (out May 5), and he dropped some tantalizing tidbits about Stallone’s top-secret role. “Look for clues and you will find out the character Sylvester Stallone plays.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rocks into theaters in two short months. And if its advance promos are any indication, it’ll be playing to the same strengths that helped make its predecessor one of 2015’s biggest hits. It’s latest TV commercial has plenty of familiar banter, lavish explosions, and a classic Jay and the Americans tune.
Very few tentpole extravaganzas nowadays can resist a post-credit “stinger” — the fact Logan didn’t have a tease-the-inevitable-follow-up sequence (in favor of an exclusive pre-movie Deadpool clip) seemed almost shocking. You’ll recall 2015’s Guardians of the Galaxy had a stinger — featuring Howard the Duck, no less — so it’s no surprise to hear that its follow-up also will give viewers a little something extra.
As if hopes were not already high enough for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,’ audience expectations just went through the roof with the news that the upcoming Marvel sequel got a 100% approval rating from a recent test screening. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, noting that scores this high are extremely rare from test screenings, and unprecedented for Marvel movies: the previous highest-scorers were ‘Avengers Assemble’ and ‘Iron Man 3,’ which reportedly both scored somewhere over 90%. Naturally, this got fans pretty excited – but returning ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ writer-director James Gunn had a somewhat self-deprecating response to the news.
