    Stepping into a sun-bathed courtyard where light is bouncing off the sandstone columns and arcades that edge the vast square, I could have been in a golden Italian piazza – Siena, say, or Florence. In truth, I have just walked five minutes up the hill from Halifax station in West Yorkshire. Such is the magical quality of the courtyard of the town’s Georgian Piece Hall – helped, I admit, by a dose of spring sunshine.
