Taron Egerton has landed his next lead movie role in upcoming Netflix thriller Apex.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Charlize Theron will also star in the film, playing an adrenaline junkie rock climber who "finds out that nature isn’t the only dangerous element out to get her when she sets out on an expedition in the wild".

Egerton will reportedly play a psychopath who stalks Theron's character.

Baltasar Kormákur is directing the film from a script written by Jeremy Robbins. Further details are being kept under wraps for the time being.

In the meantime, Egerton will next been seen onscreen in Netflix's upcoming festive thriller Carry-On, which releases on the streaming platform next month.

The Rocketman actor stars in the film as a TSA agent who is blackmailed by a mysterious traveller (Ozark’s Jason Bateman) to let a dangerous package slip through security and onto a Christmas Day flight.

Other cast members include Descendants star Sofia Carson, Till's Danielle Deadwyler, Once Upon a Time’s Sinqua Walls, The OC's Logan Marshall-Green, Sons of Anarchy’s Theo Rossi and Breaking Bad's Dean Norris.

Egerton is also set to star in Apple TV+'s upcoming crime drama Firebug alongside Lovecraft Country actor Jurnee Smollett.

Loosely inspired by true events, the series will see the pair play an arson investigator and "a rising star detective" who pursue two serial arsonists.

Egerton's Black Bird co-star Greg Kinnear, Trying's Rafe Spall, The Purge's Hannah Emily Anderson and The Lincoln Lawyer's Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine will also star.

While Egerton was set to reprise his role as Gary 'Eggys' Unwin in a third Kingsman movie, which had been slated to begin filming this year, 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell recently said that there are "no plans on doing [Kingsman sequels or prequels] anytime soon".

Apex does not yet have a release date.
