Nicole Kidman already looks set to star in Warner Bros/DC’s ‘Aquaman’ as the mother of Jason Momoa’s title character – and now it looks like we also know who his father will be. And it seems the Atlantean superhero has some distinctly Antipodean heritage.

Yes, not content with having Australia’s most famous actress as his mum (an Atlantean), New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison is now in talks to play Aquaman’s dad (a human), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Morrison made his name in 1994 drama ‘Once Were Warriors,’ but is probably best known as Jango Fett (another father role, in this instance that of iconic bounty hunter Boba Fett) in ‘Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.’ More recently he voiced Chief Tui in Disney’s ‘Moana.’

‘Aquaman’ already boasted one key player from down under; Australian director James Wan, who comes to the DC Extended Universe from the billion dollar blockbuster success of 2015’s ‘Fast & Furious 7’ (although in the interim he returned to his low budget horror roots with ‘The Conjuring 2’).

Casting news aplenty has been rolling in on ‘Aquaman’ as the superhero movie nears production. As well as Morrison and Kidman, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is also in talks to appear as the film’s villain, Black Manta.

They are poised to join Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Defoe and Wan’s ‘The Conjuring’ actor Patrick Wilson. Heard and Defoe are also set to appear alongside Momoa in the upcoming ‘Justice League,’ which will give Aquaman his introduction proper into the DCEU following his very brief cameo in ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.’

With increasing talk of behind the scenes troubles in the DCEU, most notably with Ben Affleck stepping down as director of ‘The Batman,’ it remains to be seen whether the DC brand will prove as enduring as their rivals Marvel. Given ‘Aquaman’ has often been written off as a bit of a joke character, giving him his own feature might be a risky move – but here’s hoping it’s a risk that pays off.

‘Justice League’ is set to open in UK cinemas on 17 November, just over five months after ‘Wonder Woman’ hits screens on 2 June. ‘Aquaman,’ meanwhile, is scheduled for October 2018.
