‘Infinity War’ has been a long time coming. Marvel Studios has spent the best part of a decade introducing all the pieces of the Infinity Gauntlet… and after appearing in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, the big, bad Thanos was finally given more than just a cameo.

Surely, he has to be back for the sequel… right?

Well, not exactly.

During an interview with Collider, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ director, James Gunn revealed that Thanos won’t be in the upcoming sequel… and there’s a good reason for that.

“It’s about two sisters,” he explained. “It’s not about the sisters and their father. It’s about two sisters and what were the sisters’ problems with each other? And, you know, some of those things were caused by being raised by the ultimate abusive father. But it really isn’t about Thanos, and frankly, I just wasn’t inspired to put him in the movie.”

It sounds like an interesting direction. After all, we already got a glimpse at their sibling rivalry in the first movie… so where do they go from there? Removing Thanos from the equation certainly makes things a bit more direct.

But that doesn’t mean it’ll all go smoothly.

“I kind of go with my gut on these things and [including Thanos] just wasn’t what I wanted to do,” he said. “It wasn’t the most fun part of the movie last time for me and I just didn’t really wanna do it this time. And again, the relationship with Thanos has nothing to do with it. It’s not about their relationship with Thanos. It’s about their relationship to each other, and what is that? And that was interesting to me, and I thought that was important to our story, and that was important to our characters. What happened with them in the past—there’s a lot of stuff that happened with them in the past that affects our characters presently.”

Does that mean we won’t get another Thanos cameo?

I certainly wouldn’t rule it out. After all, with ‘Infinity War’ coming up, it might be a good time to start putting all the pieces together. But don’t expect to see Thanos in the main film.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ heads to cinemas on 28 April 2017.
