Watch: Get an exclusive new look at The Baby

New Sky Atlantic horror-comedy The Baby — launching on 7 July via Sky and streaming service NOW — offers a fresh take on that well-worn trope of the malevolent infant.

Produced by SISTER, the people that brought you Chernobyl and Landscapers, the new eight-episode series stars actor and comedian Michelle De Swarte (Netflix's The Duchess) as a 38-year-old woman who finds herself responsible for a mysterious baby.

It's described as "a darkly funny, raw examination of motherhood, from the perspective of a woman who doesn’t want to be one."

We're thrilled to share a new look at the upcoming show that is sure to have everyone talking. Watch the clip above.

Michelle De Swarte (The Duchess) stars as 38-year-old Natasha, who is furious that her closest friends are all having babies. But when she is unexpectedly landed with a baby of her own, her life dramatically implodes. Controlling, manipulative but incredibly cute, the baby twists Natasha’s life into a surreal horror show. As she discovers the true extent of the Baby’s deadly nature, Natasha makes increasingly desperate attempts to get rid of it. She doesn’t want a baby. But the baby definitely wants her.

Talking about the limited series earlier this year, De Swarte told W Magazine that making the show was a dream as a fan of the horror genre.

"It was an absolute treat," she said. "If you’re a true fan of horror, you have to make peace with the fact that you’ll mostly be watching horror films on your own because the majority of people do not like watching horror.

"So to be part of a whole crew and team making the genre was great. I loved being able to do a lot of jump scares, which Natasha does in this show."

She added that the show is likely to provoke a lot of conversation around parenthood and caregiving.

"I trust that the audience will take from it what they need and what they want from it. But being part of the show, what I thought it was about was abandonment and how sometimes, if you don’t resolve things that happen in your childhood, they can really affect your adulthood."
