The Coen Brothers Won’t Ever Make A Big Lebowski Sequel

In hardly surprising, but still slightly disappointing, news, The Coen Brothers have confirmed that they will never make a sequel to ‘The Big Lebowski’.

Joel and Ethan Coen were asked about the chances of either a ‘Big Lebowski 2′ or a spin-off that focused on one of the film’s many beloved characters ahead of the release of ‘Hail, Caesar!’. And the pair were emphatic that it’s just not going to happen.

In fact, Joel Coen made a reference to George Clooney’s declaration to the press that ‘Hail, Caesar!’ would be his next film before the brothers had finished its script, when talking about the possibility of a new ‘Big Lebowski’ film.

“Tara Reid likes to announce that just like [George] Clooney likes to announce ‘Hail, Caesar!’. In this case, I don’t think we’ll oblige,” Joel Coen explained to Variety.

One of the other rumours about a possible new ‘Big Lebowski’ film was that it might be a spin-off of John Turturro’s character Jesus. This was something that the actor had previously tried to tease to the press too.

But Ethan Coen’s response to this potential film was short and shrift too, as he simply declared, “No.”

However, the Coen Brothers did reveal that there is one sequel that they are interested in. Ethan insisted that they want to do a ‘Barton Fink’ follow-up in the future, which will revolve around the playwright living in Berkeley in the 1960s. The original was set in 1941.

Joel Coen added regarding the potential sequel, “That’s the one movie that we thought deserved a sequel, called ‘Old Fink.’ But we don’t want to do it until Turturro is quite old. He’s getting there.”

Joe Coen’s remarks suggest that, depending on when in the 60s ‘Old Fink’ is set, the follow-up to the 1991 Palme d’Or winner should be released within the next few years. But, as it’s the Coens, they might just wait until 58-year-old Turturro looks really elderly until they proceed with it.

There’s still word on the Sy Ableman spin-off though.
