DreamWorks Animation and their new parent company Universal have axed the planned sequel to the 2013 animated hit, Variety reports.

While the original film was a box office success grossing over $587 million worldwide, the follow-up movie has reportedly had a troubled development, and had already had its planned 2017 release date pushed back a year.

Sources close to the film stress that ‘The Croods 2’ is not a casualty of Universal’s takeover of DreamWorks Animation, saying the decision had already been made but was only made official this past week.

Sequels to other existing DreamWorks Animation franchises are still said to be on the cards, including a fifth ‘Shrek’ and a third ‘How to Train Your Dragon.’ Universal are also said to be working on a live-action ‘Voltron’ movie, a project developed by DWA.

Variety’s unnamed source at Universal also notes that “‘The Croods’ is still very much in the DreamWorks catalog. It’s not unheard of that it might be something someone takes a look at in the future.”

In any case, ‘The Croods’ has continued in a small screen capacity, with a recent cartoon series on Netflix.
