Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship takes centre stage in the latest trailer for the fourth season of The Crown.

In the upcoming season, focus will be on the courtship and matrimony of the Queen's (Olivia Colman) eldest son (Josh O'Connor) and Lady Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin) as the Netflix series moves into the 1980s.

Their doomed union takes precedent in the trailer as narration describes a "fairy tale" romance contrasting with scenes hinting at the turbulent goings-on behind closed doors, with the final shot depicting Diana on her 1981 wedding day.

"Here is the stuff of which fairy tales are made. A prince and princess on their wedding day. But fairy tales usually end at this point with the simple phrase: 'They lived happily ever after'," the narration states.

"As husband and wife live out their vows, loving and cherishing one another, sharing life's splendours and miseries, achievements and setbacks they will be transformed in the process.

"Our faith sees the wedding day not as the place of arrival but the place where the adventure really begins."
