According to Variety, the 51-year-old filmmaker has just signed up to direct ‘The Division’ – the upcoming adaptation of the popular Tom Clancy video game starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain.

“Gold director Stephen Gaghan is attaching himself to write and direct Ubisoft’s adaptation of its popular video game ‘The Division’ starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain,” they revealed. “Ubisoft Motion Pictures will develop with Gyllenhaal’s and Riva Marker’s Nine Stories and Chastain’s Freckle Films.”

And it seems Gaghan is over the moon to be taking on ‘The Division’.

“I’m excited to work with Ubisoft Motion Pictures and collaborate with their team at Massive Entertainment to bring ‘The Division’ to the big screen,” he told Variety. They’re great guys, exceptionally creative, and willing to take risks.”

‘The Division’ is based on Tom Clancy’s hugely popular video game, which focusses on the efforts of the Strategic Homeland Division to tackle a smallpox pandemic which has resulted in the quarantine of huge areas of New York. Investigating the outbreak, it’s soon clear that it’s actually a biological attack… and The Division is tasked with finding out more about the perpetrators while combatting riots and rising criminal activity.

“The game has been an enormous success, in large part due to the visual landscape they created, their vision of a mid-apocalyptic Manhattan. It’s immersive, wonderfully strange, and yet familiar, filled with possibilities,” said Gaghan. “It’s also remarkable to be able to collaborate with Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal early in the process. We all feel the story Ubisoft created is more relevant than ever.”

When will ‘The Division’ make it to the big screen?

For now, that remains unclear.

It’s an ambitious project, with Ubisoft already working on a ‘Splinter Cell’ adaptation starring Tom Hardy. Still, however long it takes, I cant help thinking that ‘The Division’ is ripe for a big screen adaptation. Since the game’s launch, it felt like a very cinematic story.

And with Gyllenhaal in the leading role, it could break the video game movie curse.
