The Hunger Games Prequels In The Works

According to Variety, Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns has revealed that the studio plans to continue the ‘Hunger Games’… with prequels to the original movie.

“[The Hunger Games franchise] will live on and on,” he said during the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York. And it sounds as though we could be getting more arena-based combat.

Noting that the first two films were set mostly within the arenas of the 74th and 75th Hunger Games, Burns explained that the younger fans of ‘The Hunger Games’ preferred this approach… and their plans for the franchise would likely return to the games.

“If we went backwards there obviously would be arenas,” he added.

Unfortunately, there’s been no official word from the studio about what to expect from the franchise, now that Katniss Everdeen’s storyline has come to a close.

But judging from Michael Burns’ comments, it sounds as though Lionsgate has some solid plans… and at this stage, it feels as though ‘The Hunger Games’ prequels would be a bit of a no-brainer.

After all, the latest instalment has grossed nearly $524 million at the box office.

But would ‘The Hunger Games’ prequels be well received?

That’s another question entirely… and it really depends upon the filmmakers’ approach. After all, it makes little sense to replicate the Katniss archetype, when we know that the rebellion won’t happen until much later.

Of course, with younger viewers still interested in the arena-based survival antics of the first two films, a change of focus could be exactly what ‘The Hunger Games’ needs.

But for now, we’ll have to wait and see… even if the odds are ever in its favour.
