The Incredibles 2 Heading In 'New Directions' Says Brad Bird

Brad Bird has offered an update on the upcoming sequel to Pixar classic ‘The Incredibles’, revealing little in the way of story but promising “new directions”.

At this early stage very little is known about the sequel other than Brad Bird’s return as writer and director, and the fact it’s been set a 21 June, 2019 release date.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly Bird refused to reveal any plot or character details, saying with a laugh: “I don’t like unwrapping presents before Christmas.”

“It’s very actively moving, and we’re excited about it,” he said. “[We’re] trying to take it in some new directions.”

'The Incredibles 2’ will mark Bird’s return to animation following two live action films in 'Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’ and 'Tomorrowland’.

While the latter proved divisive at best, Bird’s three animated films to date are widely heralded as all-time classics.

His big screen debut 'The Iron Giant’ (which he was promoting the Blu-Ray re-release of when he spoke to EW) got him his job directing 'The Incredibles’ for Pixar which he followed up with the often unfairly-forgotten 'Ratatouille’.

So, it’s safe to say his are a capable pair of hands then.

‘The Incredibles 2′ is the last of Pixar’s currently-announced crop of sequels, and ironically the one fans most wanted a sequel for before we got the likes of ‘Toy Story 3′, ‘Monsters University’ and ‘Finding Dory’.

How the film sits with the ongoing onslaught of superhero movies will be interesting to see, but it’s still a long way off.
