The Masked Singer finally made it to the UK in 2020 and viewers are gripped by the offbeat entertainment show.
The identities of the 12 performing celebrities involved are a complete mystery until they are voted off from the programme by judges Ken Jeong, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross. To cheers of “take it off!” from the audience, they remove their disguise, revealing who they are.
The secret of who’s taking part is kept tightly under wraps and even host Joel Dommett doesn’t know who they are as the audience and judges learn more about the participants through some complex clues.
The already unmasked celebs are:
Butterfly - Patsy Palmer
Pharaoh - Alan Johnson
Chameleon - Justin Hawkins
Tree - Teddy Sheringham
However, there are still nine celebrities remaining in the competition and there have been some tricky clues to wade through. While some hints seem more obvious than others, they certainly aren't easy as it has been proven the clues can be rather abstract.
But with what viewers have been presented with so far there's certainly some convincing names in the mix. So who could be behind the masks?
The somewhat frightening Queen Bee was the first contestant to perform, giving clues that they started their career when they were young, and that they were "a bit of a wildcard".
At first glance these clues appeared to suggest it could be a child star who lost their way.
However, when they began to sing, some viewers thought the voice was unmistakably that of Nicola Roberts of Girls Aloud fame.
The guess would also lend itself to the "wild card" clue as Roberts was a wild card choice during Popstars: The Rivals.
I'm saying Queen Bee is Nicola Roberts. The chorus sounds REALLY like her - and she was a wildcard in Girls Aloud. Plus the clue about growing up and wanting to be herself now - because she used to be in a group?! #MaskedSinger— sᴜᴘᴇʀ ᴛᴠ (@superTV247) January 4, 2020
This theory was further validated in the second episode as she described herself as a “lawmaker”, with Roberts previously working on a campaign to get the law changed around sun bed usage.
Best guess: Nicola Roberts
Notable mentions: Charlotte Church, Sheridan Smith
Duck is definitely a sporty individual as they shared they were once a long-distance runner and that they enjoy surfing.
However, their second performance hinted that sport may not be what they are really known for.
While it looked as though she could be an athlete, a dazzling show in the sing-off hinted that she could well be known for her vocal abilities.
Another big clue was dropped when Duck 850,000 had sung ‘Happy Birthday’ to her once and she in turn had sung the tune for a “true legend”.
Fans pointed out that Skin, Skunk Anansie’s vocalist, had once sung for Nelson Mandela and had been serenaded by thousands of Polish fans once.
Subsequently, it looks as though it’s more than likely to be Skin.
Best guess: Skin from Skunk Anansie
Notable mentions: Denise Lewis, Paula Radcliffe, Dame Kelly Holmes
Unicorn galloped around the stage on Saturday night’s episode like a real show pony with a performance of Kate Bush’s Babushka which sounded like it came from the mouth of a real professional.
Clues given by the contestant hinted at them standing out from the crowd, and that they were a confident individual.
The exuberant John Barrowman seems like a good fit for Unicorn, as many fans pointed out.
Barrowman was even asked if he was behind the mask as he appeared on Dancing On Ice the following night by Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield. However, he remained tight-lipped.
His second performance raised more questions though, as he explained he’d grown up on a small island before moving to a big city.
As a result, another name was thrown into the mix, Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters fame who grew up on San Juan Island, and he’s looking like a good bet.
Even the judges were left questioning whether it really was Barrowman after all.
Best guess: Jake Shears
Notable mentions: Adam Lambert, Louie Spence, John Barrowman
The judges were convinced the prickly customer could be a comedian due to being "active at night" and feeling at home on stage and viewers were in sync as they threw up many funny men as suggestions.
A past in the theatre was also alluded to as they revealed they'd once had a job that meant they died "at 8.30 every night".
One of the names repeatedly brought up by fans was Jason Manford, who has enjoyed stints in theatre and has displayed his impressive vocal talent before
His appearance on stage in Sweeney Todd as the ill-fated Aldolfo Pirelli also saw him die on stage every night, so he was looking like a frontrunner.
My mind has been changed, Hedgehog is Jason Manford not Rob Brydon, search ‘Jason Manford signing’ on YouTube, it’s the exact same voice #MaskedSinger— Vic (@Victoria_Belk98) January 5, 2020
However, after Hedgehog’s second appearance, Manford denied taking part in the show in an appearance on GMB as he said: "I don't want to spoil the show by saying no but - no.”
The second performance saw Hedgehog make references to "having a ball" which left McCall thinking it could be Michael Ball behind the mask.
Best guess: Jason Manford
Notable mentions: Jack Whitehall, Michael McIntyre, Ian McKellan, Michael Ball
Wearing one of the show's more mysterious outfits as it covered their entire body, the American-accented Monster teased they were a "big" personality.
There were also allusions to gold trumpets (Grammy Awards?) and perhaps one the evening's more bizarre clues as Monster teased his hero is Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet fame.
Cee Lo Green was put forward by the judges as a possible option and it seems as though viewers were in agreement. Some even went so far as to track down an interview where the singer had professed his love for Hadley - and it looks like it’s almost certainly him.
i take the masked singer VERY seriously... the monster is 100% ceelo green and to prove it - here’s a interview from 2010 where he expresses his love for tony hadley #maskedsinger pic.twitter.com/cHr40mtqaN— ruby (@rubynaldrett) January 5, 2020
When it came to telling one truth and two lies in the second performance, Monster gave "I am Cee-Lo Green" as one his statements.
Subsequently, it looks like a classic case of double bluffing.
Best guess: Cee Lo Green
Notable mentions: Fatman Scoop
Fox was one of the more energetic stars to appear on the programme with hints suggesting links to the East End.
While immediately it seemed as though it was another EastEnders star - on second thoughts it seems too obvious a clue, plus an Albert Square alumni had already been unmasked.
One major clue came after the performance as Fox told judges they collected teapots. Subsequently, Twitter got to work to get to the bottom of the unusual hobby and found van Outen had previously professed her love of the ceramics.
Although, she might not be the only famous teapot aficionado out there so it isn’t exactly a closed case.
Best guess: Denise Van Outen
Notable mentions: Sam Fox, Anita Dobson, Bonnie Langford, Samantha Womack
The title of the most spellbinding performance of the weekend could be attributed to Octopus who sung their heart out with a rendition of ‘Part of Your World’ from Little Mermaid.
The act alluded to be "leggy", perhaps suggesting they are a model or a dancer.
The cephalopod also admitted a love of weight training, which puts a lot of celebs in the frame when it comes down to it.
One of the more credible guesses is Ashley Roberts who made a name for herself in the Pussycat Dolls and has also done a stint on Strictly Come Dancing.
However, clues ahead of Octopus' second performance saw the secret celeb linked to Jason Donovan as a photo of the Neighbours heartthrob was shown in the VT, therefore throwing Kylie, or perhaps Dannii Minogue, into the mix.
Best guess: Ashley Roberts
Notable mentions: Courtney Act, Nicole Scherzinger, Dannii Minogue, Kylie Minogue
Daisy presented herself as her export to the UK having come from the US, it seemed, and gave a performance that hinted she was a professional.
However, there is one clear front runner in who could be behind the mask in this case: singer Kelis.
While many took the clue that Daisy's name is based "upon the seeds she grew from" to mean she herself has a plant-based name, it could be more complex than that.
Kelis' name is a portmanteau of those of her parents, her father Kenneth and mother Eveliss.
The VT saw the character lounging round a diner with close-ups on the food in front of her. This could be two hints to Kelis' identity as the singer is also a chef and one her most famous hits, Milkshake, was filmed in a diner.
However, some reckon Ashley Roberts could be a contender for Daisy as well as Octopus and she's addressed the speculation too, claiming she "didn't know" who it was.
After more cooking clues ahead of her second performance Rita Ora guessed it would be Kelis, and she’s probably right on the money.
Best guess: Kelis
Notable mentions: None, almost certainly Kelis
