The most awkward movie star interviews of 2013

Willis, Wahlberg and co. helped make it a vintage year for car crash film banter.

As anyone who has seen ‘Notting Hill’ will know, the process of journalists interviewing movie stars plugging their latest film is ridiculous and artificial.

Usually these fake chats are just dull and/or fawning, but occasionally, whether due to personality clashes, difficult questions or just the celebs being in a funny mood, these interviews turn bizarre and truly awkward. 2013 has been an especially good year for this kind of thing, thanks mainly to a certain 80s action star. Take it away Bruce!

[The biggest movie mistakes of 2013]

Bruce Willis vs. The One Show
In this horrific chitchat with Matt Baker and Alex Jones, Willis slated the title of the latest ‘Die Hard’ flick and generally seemed confused and spaced out. He later apologised, saying: “I didn't get very many compliments about it. They said I was a little stale. I was jet lagged.” Maybe it was just a one off?

Bruce Willis vs. Magic FM
Noooo, it wasn’t. Bruce is a serial offender when it comes to awkward interviews, as anyone who saw/listened to his chat with Magic FM’s Jamie Edwards for ‘Red 2’ will know. Bruce told the hapless reporter that he wanted to drive away from the interview and made sarcastic comments about the quality of the questions he was being asked. Awful.

Bruce Willis vs. Daybreak

Okay, just one more entry from the big guy. This interview wasn’t awkward exactly, just odd. Talking with Daybreak’s Kate Garraway, for reasons best known to himself, Bruce did the whole thing in dressing gown. By this point, folks were wondering if Willis was being deliberately strange to drum up publicity for his films.

Naomi Watts vs. Mark Kermode
Watts, perhaps by now aware that her portrayal of Princess Diana (in ‘Diana’) had been slated, was extremely prickly on Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo’s Five Live show. After she was asked an innocuous question about whether they got permission to film outside Kensington Palace, she testily wrapped things up early. “It was nice talking to you,” she said through gritted teeth, then appeared to walk out.

Quentin Tarantino vs. Krishnan Guru-Murthy
The ‘Pulp Fiction’ director reacted furiously to a question from the 'Channel 4 News' presenter about whether gun crime was linked to violence in movies. “I’m shutting your butt down!” Tarantino shouted, adding that the interview should just be an advert for his film – ‘Django Unchained’. The affair was later dubbed “Tantrumtino” by Guru-Murthy.

Henry Cavill vs. Empire
Empire’s Ali Plumb heroically tried his best to ask some quirky questions to ‘Man of Steel’ hunk Henry Cavill, but it didn’t quite come off. He opened with a statement that Cavill would make any men taking dates to the film look bad, which the actor didn’t really how to respond to. He concluded by trying to get Cavill to try his glasses on. The star politely refused. Watch the interview here.

Morgan Freeman vs. boredom
Freeman let the world know just how exciting he finds promotional interviews by falling asleep during one… live on air. While plugging ‘Now You See Me’ with Michael Caine on the Q13 FOX News ‘This Morning’ show, the actor gently dozed off twice, before waking up again and seamlessly continuing the interview. What a pro.

Mark Wahlberg vs. Sobriety (allegedly)
Was Mark Wahlberg a little worse for wear on ‘Graham Norton’? It certainly looked that way, with the star slurring, supping red wine, flirting outrageously with fellow guest Sarah Silverman and generally saying mad things. Sample quote (to another guest, Michael Fassbender): “I heard he's good at voices. So, if he's good at voices, I want to challenge you. I want to challenge you to a big d**k contest." Lovely stuff!

Harrison Ford vs. Yahoo Movies
Just to show we’re good sports at Yahoo Movies, here’s our most horrific interview from 2013. We were granted an audience with Harrison Ford (and writer Roberto Orci) as they promoted ‘Ender’s Game’. We threw in an silly question about whether the Han Solo star was getting annoyed answering questions about the upcoming ‘Star Wars’ movies; he pretended to fall asleep and angrily said he was “here to talk about now”. The atmosphere now polluted, we followed up with a question about his notoriously grumpy reputation - which again did not go down well. Sorry Han.
