Hollywood is reeling following the sudden death of Prince, who died yesterday aged just 57.

Spike Lee held an impromptu block party outside his offices in Brooklyn last night, with hundreds descending on the Fort Greene neighbourhood.

He announced the party on his Instagram page, saying: “We will dance, sing and shout to his music.”

The dress code was, of course, purple.

Taking to the streets, the crowd danced to classics like ‘Little Red Corvette’, 'I Wanna be Your Lover’, and 'If I Was Your Girlfriend’.

Lee then led an emotional sing-along of 'Purple Rain’ from his stoop wearing a purple t-shirt and according to reports 'as the event wrapped, Prince’s music could still be heard resounding from surrounding cars and apartments’.

The legendary recording artist, who was found dead at his estate in Minneapolis following a bout of flu, was hailed in the movie world.

Will Smith added that he had spoken to the artist the night before his death.

Michael Keaton, whose movie ‘Batman’ was adorned with a Prince soundtrack, compared the musician to the ‘true greats’.

“I put him up there with Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, Miles [Davis] among the true greats,” he said.

“Some musicians had their moments. He had what seemed like centuries of being great.”

“He was one of those people you just assume, ‘I am going to be watching what Prince does when he is 80’. And it is going to be as good or better, and as innovative, as it is now.

“He was a special person who didn’t have to move to New York or Paris or Los Angeles for fame. He stayed right there in Minneapolis. There was no one who did it like Prince did it.”

Prince Rogers Nelson, 1958 – 2016.
