Third Hobbit Film Retitled To The Battle of the Five Armies

Peter Jackson has revealed a new title for the third 'Hobbit' film via his Facebook page.

Peter Jackson has retitled the third 'Hobbit' film ahead of its release this December.

The New Zealand director revealed in a Facebook post that the film will now be called 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies'.

"We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate," Jackson explains.

"And so: "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" it is."

Up to this point it had been assumed the final film in the trilogy would be called 'The Hobbit: There and Back Again', but it seems like the film-makers had a last minute change of heart.

“'There and Back Again' felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film,"says Jackson.

"But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the 'Desolation of Smaug'".

However, Jackson says the title may be retained for future use.

"As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies."

There were rumblings yesterday that a title change was imminent, 'The Hobbit: Into The Fire' mooted as a replacement.

The post also revealed that the extended cut of 'The Desolation of Smaug' will add 25 minutes of extra footage, with new music from composer Howard Shore.
