The Witcher Heads To The Big Screen

It looks as though fans of ‘The Witcher’ will finally get to see Geralt of Rivia take to the big screen… and it could be in cinemas as early as 2017.

According to Coming Soon, the novel series by writer Andrzej Sapkowski (which also spawned a successful video game series) will be getting its own movie.

“The Witcher movie in development for 2017 release,” they revealed. “A film adaptation of the Andrzej Sapkowski novel series has been announced by The Sean Daniel Company, which previously produced The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, The Expanse, and the upcoming remake of Ben-Hur.”

Following the story of Geralt of Rivia, the novels introduce us to the world of the Witchers – a group of monster hunters who roam the land, selling their services to those plagued by the monstrous creatures of the world.

And they’re helped along by the supernatural powers they possess.

The popular video game series recently saw the release of its third instalment – ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’ – which has already been met with critical acclaim.

But what can we expect from the movie?

“The Witcher movie will be an introduction to Geralt the Witcher, a nomadic monster hunter for hire, and his duel world of men and beasts,” they revealed. “[It] is also being planned as the beginning of a television and film series with the first movie set for a world premiere in 2017.”

Tomasz Bagiński will direct ‘The Witcher’, having previously directed the opening cinematics for the first and second games in the popular series. Thania St. John is set to write the script, based on the short stories ‘The Witcher’ and ‘Lesser Evil’ from writer Andrzej Sapkowski’s ‘The Last Wish’ collection.

And after working on the popular TV show ‘Grimm’, their choice of screenwriter seems rather apt.

Jarosław Sawko and Piotr Sikora as well as Sean Daniel and Jason Brown will produce.
