Thirteen residents die in care home near Glasgow after Covid outbreak

At least 13 residents at a care home near Glasgow in Scotland have reportedly died in an outbreak of Covid-19.

Seven more residents have also tested positive for the virus at Mavisbank care home in Bishopbriggs, the BBC reported.

Some 11 staff were self-isolating after testing positive for the virus.

Last month, the Care Inspectorate rated the home’s response to coronavirus as “weak”.

During the unannounced check on 26 November inspectors found the home’s cleanliness to be a “significant concern”.

It also described the cleanliness of the environment and the overall fabric of the building as “poor”, with inspectors saying they were “very concerned about the potential risk of infection for residents”.

The care home was ordered to carry out a deep clean by 11 November and a spokesperson said issues were “immediately rectified”.

A spokesperson for Mavisbank told the BBC: "Our thoughts and sympathies are with all families who have lost a loved one from coronavirus.

"As we navigate this outbreak, we continue to work closely with all the relevant authorities to contain the virus and safeguard our residents.

"We are pleased that a number of residents have now recovered, and we continue to closely monitor the health and wellbeing of all those affected.

Scotland recorded 37 coronavirus deaths and 969 positive tests in the 24 hours up to Friday.

It brought the death toll of people who tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days to 3,676.
