Timbaland, Jay-Z, Beyoncé Among ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards Winners

Timbaland and Jay-Z shared Songwriter of the Year honors on Thursday night at the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers’ 28th Rhythm & Soul Music Awards. The two multi-talents also were recognized, along with Beyoncé, for Top Hip Hop/R&B Song (“Drunk in Love”) at the ceremony, held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles.

The annual gala honors the songwriters and publishers behind the most performed ASCAP songs as measured on the 2014 R&B, hip-hop, rap and gospel charts.

The performing rights organization also handed out top kudos to Sony/ATV Tunes as Publisher of the Year; Kid Ink and co-writer Jeremih for Top Rap Song (“Show Me” featuring Chris Brown); and Bart Millard for Top Gospel Song (“I Can Only Imagine”).

In terms of career achievement, Lauryn Hill was given the ASCAP Golden Note Award, following in the footsteps of such past recipients as Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Quincy Jones, Pharrell Williams and Alicia Keys. The Fugees co-founder-turned-solo artist seized the occasion by performing a medley of her hits.

Other performers during the evening included D.R.A.M., Jazmine Sullivan, Migos and gospel artist Smokie Norful.
