After twenty-three Bond films, it looks as though the producers of 007's latest jaunt are clutching at straws when it comes to new names… and this time, they're apparently looking a bit further afield.
For as long as I can remember, It's been a tradition when it comes James Bond films that they're each named after one of Ian Fleming's many novels. Even 'Quantum of Solace' was named after one of the prolific author's short stories. But with twenty-three films under their belt, it's got to be difficult to come up with suitable names…
British tabloid rumour-mongers The Sun believe they've struck gold with the title for Bond's latest movie… but I have to admit, I'm not sure they're really onto much.
Apparently titled 'Devil May Care' this will be Sam Mendes' second outing with Bond after directing the hit success, 'Skyfall'. But what's with the title? It turns out, it's the name of a novel that wasn't even penned by Fleming himself…
Written by Sebastian Faulks to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Ian Fleming's birth, the story focusses on Dr Julius Gorner - an evil chemist with a vendetta against the United Kingdom… and as always, he has a score to settle.
But what does this have to do with Sam Mendes' next Bond film?
In my opinion, very little. Even if this rumour proves to be genuine, it's likely that the name is merely a working title at this stage… which would obviously be subject to change. And even if the title does derive from Faulks' rather dismally received novel, the plot is likely to have nothing to do with the final film. After all, the majority of Bond films have merely taken the novels' names as inspiration.
But while it's almost certainly the stuff of rumours and wild speculation, I have to admit… there's a part of me that quite likes it. Not because of the original novel, but there's something about the sound of that title. It certainly sounds a lot like a Bond film.
Will it prove to be the movie's title when it's released in 2015? I highly doubt it. But it's still something to bear in mind.
What do you think of the title, 'Devil May Care'? What would you call Bond's latest adventure? Let us know in the comments below…
