Todd Phillips will do 'Joker 2' on one condition

As it nears $1 billion at the box office, it is safe to say that Joker has proven to be a smash-hit for Warner Bros beyond even their wildest imaginations.

The fact that it has been touted for awards season glory, something it has already achieved after picking up the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, means that Joker is likely to keep on making money all the way up to the Oscars, too, where Joaquin Phoenix is one of the heavy favourites for the Best Actor gong.

The success of Joker, and the manner in which it takes a more grounded and psychological look at the comic-book genre, is almost certainly going to provoke a number of copycat movies in the same vein. But those that mean that we’re actually going to get a Joker 2, though?

It sounds as though writer and director Todd Phillips is slowly warming to the idea, because during a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times the filmmaker revealed that he has been mulling over how to approach a possible follow-up.

However, Phillips is adamant that he would only make Joker 2 on one condition. "It couldn't just be this wild and crazy movie about the Clown Prince of Crime. It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that Joker does.”

“Because I think that's ultimately why the movie connected, it's what's going on underneath. So many movies are about the spark and this is about the powder. If you could capture that again in a real way, that would be interesting."

Ahead of the release of Joker both Phillips and Phoenix insisted that it would be a standalone movie, as they wanted to make a superhero film that was the complete antithesis to the seemingly never endless installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, considering how Joker ends, there is certainly plenty more of Arthur Fleck’s story left to tell, and now Phillips sounds as though he wants to be the one to tell it.
