American fashion designer-turned-film director Tom Ford has revealed that his 2009 Oscar nominated movie, 'A Single Man', which starred Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, was partly autobiographical.

In an interview with the 'Times' newspaper, he  explained that the script of the film, inspired by a Christopher Isherwood short story about a fastidious, suicidal academic, was deeply resonant to his own life.

"There were scenes right out of our lives: my sister, my mother, the emotions," he said. "The way I was feeling at the time. I didn't know if I cared if I lived or died. Where is the beauty of the world? Discovering the beauty of the world, having an epiphany. I've had those moments where time stands still and I think: 'It's OK'."

In the interview Ford, 51, also spoke briefly about his two-month-old son, Alexander John Buckley Ford, who he has adopted with longterm partner, fashion journalist, Richard Buckley.

Born to a surrogate in America, Alexander arrived on 23 September, the night Ford was due to host a fundraiser for Obama with Anna Wintour in London. Ford has vowed Alexander will never be seen in any press "until he's 18".

Ford, who designed the suits worn by Daniel Craig in Skyfall, says he also dresses Bradley Cooper, Tom Hanks, Hugh Jackman and Jay-Z.
