According to Deadline, the 39-year-old British actor has landed the role of Al Capone in ‘Fonzo’ - a new movie by ‘Chronicle’ and ‘Fantastic Four’ director, Josh Trank.

“Tom Hardy is attached to play all-time American gangster Al Capone in Fonzo, a new project written and to be directed by Josh Trank,” they revealed. “Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder of Addictive Pictures and Lawrence Bender are producing the pic, which centers on Capone in the final days of his life.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time Hardy has taken on gangster life…

The 2015 French-British crime thriller ‘Legend’ saw Hardy suit up as both Ronnie and Reggie Kray, in the film adaptation of the book, ‘The Profession of Violence: The Rise and Fall of the Kray Twins’.

The consensus? ‘Legend’ had its flaws… but Tom Hardy was superb.

It’s a promising start for ‘Fonzo’ then, which will see Hardy become one of the most notorious gangsters in American history.

“The pic, now in prepoduction centers on Alfonse Capone, the ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist before being famously taken down by Eliot Ness. After nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots his mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.”

Al Capone was famously played by Robert De Niro in ‘The Untouchables’.

Will ‘Fonzo’ be any good?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see. It’s Josh Trank’s first movie since the controversial shoot of ‘Fantastic Four’. But perhaps this will be his saving grace.
