Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson & A Very Big Skull In First Kong: Skull Island Image

Our first glimpse of ‘Kong: Skull Island’ promises that the original movie monster will be bigger than ever in his upcoming reboot.

Entertainment Weekly got the first image, along with a few words from the film’s director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who confirms that the Legendary production will boast the biggest King Kong to grace the screen yet.

“From the size of the skull, you can tell that things on this island are much bigger than audiences are used to with traditional Kong lore… Our Kong is by far the biggest Kong that you’ve seen on screen, and that translates to a lot of different things on the island.”

The filmmaker would appear to have done the math on this, too: “Peter Jackson’s Kong was around 25 feet. The ‘33 Kong ranged between 25 feet and 50 feet, I want to say he was 50-plus feet when he was on the Empire State Building.

“He varied in size dramatically! The ’70s Kong was somewhere between them.”

It’s hardly surprising this Kong would be the biggest yet, as the plan is for ‘Kong: Skull Island’ to set the scene for ‘Kong Vs Godzilla,’ a crossover with the 2014 Legendary reboot of that other iconic giant monster, due 2020. (FYI, Godzilla’s typically about 400 feet tall.)

But ‘Kong: Skull Island’ is about more than very big monsters, as we also have a very big name cast. Recent ‘Room’ Oscar-winner Brie Larson stars as a war photographer, whilst erstwhile Loki/alleged Bond contender Tom Hiddleston is an ex-SAS tracker.

They head up an impressive ensemble including Samuel L Jackson, John Goodman and Corey Hawkins.

However, it would appear that ‘Skull Island’ is a total reboot bearing no direct relation to any existing Kong film, including the 2005 Peter Jackson remake, and sets up an all-new timeline beginning in the 1970s.

Vogt-Roberts explains, “The ’70s was a time where it was believable that we could still be confronted with myth. And there was still unknown in the world.”

Word is it won’t be too long before we get a trailer for this; at next week’s San Diego Comic Con, perhaps?

Either way, ‘Kong: Skull Island’ will come roaring onto big screens in the UK on 10 March 2017.
