Tom Hooper To Direct Movie Of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats

Tom Hooper has been confirmed to direct a big screen version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical ‘Cats’.

The 'King’s Speech’ director already has form in this area.

He helmed the lavish movie musical adaptation of 'Les Miserables’ in 2012, starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe.

It ended up winning three Oscars and making $440 million at the box office.

'Cats’, written by Lloyd Webber in 1977, was based on T.S. Eliot’s 1939 poetry collection 'Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’.

It told the tale of a group of cats called the Jellicle tribe, and features iconic songs including 'Memory’ and 'Macavity: The Mystery Cat’, the former made famous by singer Elaine Paige.

After reaching the stage in 1981, it became the fourth longest-running show on Broadway and also in the West End, and has been translated in 20 languages.

Hooper, meanwhile, won the best director Oscar in 2010 for 'The King’s Speech’, and last year helmed the Oscar-nominated 'The Danish Girl’.

It was reported in February that he was eyeing 'Cats’ as his next project, and had actress Suki Waterhouse in the frame to star.
