He might have narrowly missed out on the role of Goose's son, but it appears Glen Powell has still bagged himself a role in the upcoming Top Gun sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Powell – who has starred in the likes of The Expendables 3 and Scream Queens – is set to join Top Gun: Maverick in a mystery role.

Maverick's son, perhaps? We can totally see that one.

The news comes a month after it was revealed that Whiplash star Miles Teller will be taking on the role of Nick 'Goose' Bradshaw's son in the hotly-anticipated sequel.

Of course, the role of Goose (and that of his son) is an integral one – after all, if it wasn't for (spoiler alert!) the tragic death of Goose in the 1986 original, we wouldn't have the Maverick we know and love today.

Speaking of Maverick, Tom Cruise has confirmed that the follow-up to the classic '80s movie has officially started filming. Well, he's got to quench that insatiable need for speed somehow.

No stranger to the danger zone, Cruise – aka Lieutenant Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell – shared a photo of the first day of shooting featuring a brooding Maverick on Twitter.

In equally exciting Top Gun news, the return of Val Kilmer was also announced back in May. Kilmer will reprise his role as Maverick's arrogant flyboy rival, Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky.

Top Gun: Maverick is expected to hit US and UK cinemas on July 12, 2019.
