Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell has been cast in Twisters, an upcoming sequel to the 1996 disaster movie Twister.

According to Variety, Powell is set to star in the next instalment alongside previously-announced cast member Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People), but neither of the actors' roles have been announced yet.

The original film, which made nearly $500 million at the box office, starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton as expert storm chasers Jo and Bill Harding, who put themselves in the line of extreme tornadoes in order to create an enhanced weather alert system.

Minari's Lee Isaac Chung will direct the sequel, which has been described by Variety as a "new chapter" in the story, but no plot details have been confirmed yet.

It had been rumoured that the sequel could follow Jo and Bill's daughter, who shares her parents' love of extreme weather, but at this stage, it's just speculation.

Back in 2021, Hunt revealed that she had tried to pitch a more diverse sequel as the movie approached its 25th anniversary, but at the time no studios were interested.

"There's an HBCU (historically Black college and university) near Nashville where we wanted it to take place, and a rocket science club, and in this one they shoot the rockets into the tornado. It was going to be so cool," she said at the time.

Meanwhile, Powell has been kept booked and busy since his breakout role in Top Gun: Maverick.

The actor is currently working on an untitled Will Gluck rom-com alongside Euphoria actor Sydney Sweeney, and he'll next star in Richard Linklater's action-comedy Hitman.

Powell will also appear alongside Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins in Locked, which has been described as an "intense, character-driven thriller," as well as Chris Morgan's sci-fi thriller Deputy X.

Twisters is scheduled to be released on July 19, 2024.
