It’s Monday and that means a rankings update from the ATP Tour’s official rankings.

This week we have a new No 1, and there is a real shakeup to the top ten.

The ATP Rankings is the elite men’s tour’s historical objective merit-based method used for determining entry and seeding in all tournaments for both singles and doubles, except as modified for the Nitto ATP Finals.

They also serve as a barometer of sorts for player forma although there is some debate about whether it is the best or most accurate way to gauge how well someone is doing.

Who are the top ten men’s players this week

10 Felix Auger-Aliassime

Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime hasn’t enjoyed the best season on clay so far but has retained his position in the top ten for now.

Auger-Aliassime has only entered the events in Rome and Madrid on clay but suffered defeats in his opening matches at both venues.

He has traditionally done better on hard courts and grass and should hope for an improvement after the French Open, but he is one of three top ten players in action this week, turning out in Lyon.

9 Taylor Fritz

The Top American in the rankings remains so thanks to a brave battle through the clay swing.

Fritz has done better than expected in the dirt, reaching semi-finals in Munich and Monte Carlo.

A defeat first up in Rome may dent his confidence but he will be back in action this week in Geneva where he is the second seed.

8 Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner might feel he has been one or two wins away from having a stupendous clay season.

However, his return is nothing to be sniffed at but his form has trended downwards recently in terms of tournament results if not his actual game which has appeared solid.

7 Andrey Rublev

Andrey Rublev was buoyed by his maiden Masters title last month but despite being one of the more consistent players on clay he drops a place.

Rublev loses his No 6 ranking despite a net points gain through the Rome Masters after he outdid his 2022 performance.

He exited the Italian Open at the last 16 but has opted to head straight to Paris this week to practice in situ ahead of the French Open which starts on Sunday, 28 May.

6 Holger Rune

The Rome Masters finalist could have made a bigger but still, Holger Rune rises to a new career high.

Rune would have moved into the top five if he had won in Rome to follow up the defence of his Munich title earlier in the clay swing.

Rune nonetheless earned a first career win over a reigning world No 1 last week when he ousted Novak Djokovic.

5 Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitspas sets himself high standards and will be disappointed with his clay swing despite reaching the last eight in each of his last four ATP Tour appearances.

Tsitsipas is a player with ambitions of Grand Slam titles and world no 1 rankings and his No 5 status will not sit well with him.

However, he is clearly among the best players in the world right now and always a contender for a deep run if not a title.

4 Casper Ruud

Casper Ruud has switched on since the tour returned to clay, allowing him to cement his place among the top players.

Ruud was a semi-finalist in Rome but lost ground on the rankings for failing to match his run to the final last season.

He is the highest-ranked player in action on the ATP Tour this week as he defends his Geneva Open crown.

3 Novak Djokovic

Djokovic knew he would lose his No 1 ranking this week but the events in Rome have also seen him drop an extra place.

His current rankings total is a point of contention as he is bereft of the 2000 he should have for his 2022 Wimbledon win and missed the Spring US hard court swing as well as the 2022 US Open season in its entirety over his vaccine standoff.

He might move back to the top of the rankings if he can win the French Open for the third time.

2 Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev enjoyed a breakthrough week in Rome, as he claimed his first ATP Tour title on clay.

Medvedev did enough to also move ahead of Novak Djokovic on top of announcing himself as a contender for Major honours in Paris.

He will not be in action this week and is expected to also practice in Paris ahead of the big start on Sunday.

1 Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz was disappointed that his winning run was ended in Rome but he had done enough to ensure that he earned himself a second reign as world No 1.

The Spaniard put himself in the frame for the achievement by retaining his titles in Barcelona and Madrid and extending his incredible winning run in his home country.

Alcaraz is the current favourite for the French Open title.
