Toy Story 4 dominated the box office this weekend, breaking the UK record for the biggest three-day haul of all time for an animated movie.

It made £15 million, and also set records in Mexico and Argentina, though in the US it fell below some industry predictions.

The sequel's stateside bow brought in $118 million (£92.7 million), some way behind the $140m to $160m that some analysts had suggested.

In all, it $238 million worldwide - £187 million – making it one of the highest grossing animated openings of all time, and only the third movie this year to cross $100 million on its first weekend of release.

It comes in behind both Incredibles 2's $183 million bow, and Finding Dory's $135 million openings, but animated movies often exceed the longevity of other box office hits, so it's likely that the movie's gross will continue to grow into the summer.

Reviews for the movie have also been as strong as hoped, with a near perfect 98 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie is also yet to open in Germany, France, Italy and Japan, but it has some way to go to top its predecessors.

Toy Story 3 made $1.06 billion in 2010, while Toy Story 2 made the equivalent of $763 million in 1999.

It'll also be gunning for the record set by Incredibles 2, Pixar's highest-ever grosser, which made $1.2 billion last year.

Starring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, Keanu Reeves, Joan Cusack and Tony Hale, it’s out now across the UK.
