Universal Pictures seems to be taking a page out of Disney's book, as a live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon is officially in the works.

Dean DeBlois, who wrote and directed the animated trilogy, will return to write, direct, and this time produce the franchise's newest instalment (via Deadline).

Based on the book series by Cressida Cowell, How to Train Your Dragon follows a hapless young Viking named Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel), who aspires to kill a dragon in order to mark his passage into manhood.

However, Hiccup ends up befriending a young, injured dragon named Toothless, and he learns that there may be more to the creatures than he first thought.

The Oscar-nominated franchise has grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide and inspired three TV shows, theme park rides, and a live show titled How to Train Your Dragon on Ice.

While the cast for the live-action film has yet to be announced, we do know that it's expected to be released in cinemas on March 14, 2025.

How to Train Your Dragon is just one of many animated classics getting the live-action treatment.

Aside from already-released films (such as Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, and Aladdin), Disney's The Little Mermaid remake is swimming into cinemas this May, while live-action remakes of Snow White, Hercules, The Aristocats and Lilo & Stitch are all in development.

DeBlois co-wrote and directed the original Lilo & Stitch movie with Chris Sanders, though Dean Fleischer Camp (who helmed A24's acclaimed Marcel the Shell With Shoes On) will direct its live-action adaptation.

How to Train Your Dragon is expected to arrive in cinemas on March 14, 2025.
