The ceremony has been widely described as a masterpiece, encompassing 'Britishness' in all its forms, with Boyle hailed for his efforts.

It drew together themes of industry, literature, monarchy, immigration and popular culture as well as celebrating institutions like the NHS, bound together with music from the likes of Paul McCartney, Dizzee Rascal and the Arctic Monkeys.

“Danny Boyle was the first winner of this Olympics with his best loved movies experiencing a surge in sales,” said a spokesperson for Amazon.co.uk.

“From 90s cult classic 'Trainspotting' through to the award-winning 'Slumdog Millionaire', the increase in orders of the British director’s films is a clear indication that people loved the spectacle he created for London 2012.”

Other stars of the ceremony have also seen their DVD sales increase thanks to their exposure.

'Mr Bean's Movie Box Set' leapt up 300% thanks to Rowan Atkinson's appearance, while Kenneth Branagh, who played Brunel in the performance, saw his film version of 'Much Ado About Nothing' boosted by 300%.
