New Daily Show Host Accused Of Anti-Semitism

Trevor Noah, the new host of The Daily Show, is already receiving criticism for jokes he made on Twitter long before he got the job.

The South African comedian was announced by Comedy Central's as Jon Stewart's replacement on Monday .

He has only appeared on The Daily Show three times and is a relative newcomer to US television.

But Noah has an international presence, and hosted a late-night talk show in South Africa, Tonight With Trevor Noah.

He is set to become an even bigger name with the new role he has landed.

But as his name hit the headlines, attention turned to the themes of some of the stand-up's jokes and comments which some have described as "anti-Semitic" and "sexist".

One he wrote in May 2014 said: "Behind every successful Rap Billionaire is a double as rich Jewish man. #BeatsByDreidel"

In another from October 2011, Noah wrote: "Oh yeah the weekend. People are gonna get drunk & think that I'm sexy!" - fat chicks everywhere."

Many people on social media have expressed their shock at these tweets and a handful of others, with some calling for Comedy Central to sack Noah.

Comedian and television host Roseanne Barr said: "@Trevornoah U should cease sexist & anti semitic 'humor' about jewish women & Israel. #comedyCentral."

But others have defended the star and have asked why the tweets are being retweeted now, in some cases, years after they were posted.

One supporter said: "So whats the excitement with #TrevorNoah's old tweets, oh i see JEALOUSY !!!!”.

Noah has not responded to the criticism but on Monday tweeted: "No-one can replace Jon Stewart. But together with the amazing team at The Daily Show, we will continue to make this the best damn news show!"
