Noah acknowledged backstage that Daily Show benefited from John Oliver’s Emmy worshipped HBO series Last Week Tonight moving out of Talk Series and into the Variety Series race (a category Oliver ultimately won).

“I told you we’d beat John Oliver if he wasn’t in our category,” Noah joked to reporters. “We did i — we got rid of John Oliver.”

The Daily Show‘s big win during Monday’s three-hour Fox telecast made headlines for other reasons. As Noah was accepting the trophy, ex-Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. — who exited the Comedy Central show in November — stood behind him and mouthed what we’ve all been thinking: “Please hire a host.” (Wood Jr. later addressed the moment on X, writing: “chill fam I was trying to do that in the low.“)
