Trump tax news: President refuses to take questions on revelations at White House event

Donald Trump refused to take questions on his tax returns when facing reporters at the White House on Monday as he announced the roll out of 150 million rapid coronavirus tests.

The president was launching the roll out of new tests as Mike Pence warned Americans should expect a rise in Covid-19 cases over the next few days, even as Mr Trump said the country was "rounding the corner"

Democrats like Nancy Pelosi, meanwhile, began warning that the $421m debts alleged by The New York Times, to be called in over the next four years, made the president a national security threat.

It was a sentiment echoed by the other voices previously with an view into the president's inner circle, including biographer Tim O'Brian and former national security adviser HR McMaster.

Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, meanwhile, said the president once laughed at the “f***ing stupid IRS”, while also suggesting the "whole clan", including Ivanka, Don Jr and Eric Trump, could be jailed over the tax controversy.

The investigation accused the president of burying payments to his daughter Ivanka Trump as “consultancy fees” in his returns, of presiding over a failing property empire and of facing a $100m mortgage repayment on Trump Tower, due in full on 2022.

Also within the report was the fact Trump's golf courses lost more than $315m over the past 20 years.

The Democratic presidential nominee, Joe Biden, was quick to respond with campaign material within hours of the story dropping, including an attack ad within hours and website, the "Trump Tax Calculator", within less than 24 hours.
