Twitter loses it after woman closes her own car door

A woman has closed her own car door – making headlines globally.

Meghan Markle amazed fans after shutting her car door, after arriving at her first solo engagement last night. Visiting the Oceania exhibition at London’s Royal Academy of Arts, the Duchess made waves within seconds of arriving with the gesture.

Of course, for most of us, closing a car door is no big deal. However, for a senior royal, who usually leaves such menial tasks to her security team, it’s more significant.

“A princess who still takes the time to shut her car door. Well done Meghan!,” tweeted royal correspondent Emily Andrews.

Another tweeted: “ She closes her own door. She is every woman.”

Others think Meghan’s actions showed her origins growing up in Los Angeles, a world away from the cosseted royal life.

One wrote: “Of course she did. She was raised an independent, American woman. She don’t need you Jeeves!”

Another added: “She is still used to doing certain things like closing her own door. I love that.”

Not everyone was quite so taken with Meghan’s door-closing gesture.

Another wrote: “I give up on this world when people are congratulating a person shutting a car door on their own.”

One of the best reactions, however, was one internet user saw the whole thing as a profound metaphor for Meghan’s “closing the door” on her estranged half-sister Samantha Markle.

Did Meghan mean to cause such a stir, or was she just acting as the grounded, down-to-earth woman she always was?

We’ll never know – but closing a car door will never feel the same.
