Tyrese Gibson “Has A Shot” At Playing Green Lantern

Actor Tyrese Gibson has set the record straight (more or less) on rumours linking him to the role of Green Lantern - and confirms he is indeed a contender.

Speaking to Larry King (quotes via ComicBook.com), the ‘Fast and Furious’ actor admits that it started out as nothing more than wishful thinking from both himself and his fans, but it may lead to something more:

“You know how they have fan-made kind of things online? A fan did this image of me as the Green Lantern (above)… and I was like, ‘Woah, that looks cool.'

“And I posted it on my Instagram, and it just went crazy — over 1,500 sites. And it was just all of this buzz, and I was like I might as well run with this thing. And I did.

“P***ed the people off, a little bit, at Warner Brothers because they thought that I had convinced the world that I had landed the role, which I didn’t. And I said, “If you go down my timeline, at no point did I say the role is mine."

“But, you know, there have been other artists, actors and actresses who have put up images of them as a comic book character and ended up landing a role. So I was like, it’s worth giving it a shot.”

In all likelihood, Gibson could be referring here to his ‘F&F’ co-star Vin Diesel, who wound up being cast as Groot in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ after posting images of the character on his Facebook page, thereby firing up the rumour mill.

Gibson goes on to say that, while he has not met ‘Batman V Superman’ and ‘Justice League’ director Zack Snyder, he has had a meeting with Warner Bros - and in reply to Larry King’s query, “you have a shot?”, the actor replies, “I do.

“I would love it. I’ve taken the oath. I would love to do it… I got the muscles for it. I can do 1,500 push-ups right now.”

If successful, Gibson would be cast as the Green Lantern John Stewart, potentially to be introduced in the second ‘Justice League’ movie in 2019, or ‘Green Lantern Corps’ in 2020, in which he would presumably co-star with another actor taking the role of Hal Jordan (previously played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 misfire).

Fan-casting rumours have also linked Idris Elba to the role of John Stewart, which the British actor has implied he would be interested in.
