Boris Johnson has backed Dominic Cummings who is facing a sustained backlash over allegations he broke the coronavirus lockdown.

Speaking at the daily Covid-19 press conference at Downing Street, the Prime Minister expressed regret for any "confusion and pain" caused by the row before, saying: "I cannot give unconditional backing to anybody but I do not believe anybody in Number 10 has done anything to undermine our messaging.”

Mr Cummings earlier told the media that he did not regret his decision to drive to Durham during lockdown and said he had not considered resigning from his role. He also denied a second trip up to his family home but admitted travelling to Barnard Castle to test his eyesight.

It comes as the UK coronavirus death toll across all settings jumped by 121 on Monday, bringing the total to nearly 37,000.
