From Town & Country

As if lockdown wasn’t already playing right into a dog’s paws – 24/7 attention and long, leisurely daily walks – now there is a delightful new cookbook full of the very best canine treats.

Beyond the Doughnut is a unique collection of playful recipes for your dog. Penned by Natalia Ashton, it is the second book the pet-nutrition coach, dog groomer, avid cook and hobbyist photographer. Her previous tome, Perfect Cocker Spaniel, was the result of more than 30 years living with dogs, largely spent in the company of English Cocker Spaniels, the breed that has become her true love.

Her second book, she says, is the “happy project” that got her through lockdown, and features accessible recipes of iconic, global foods all delightfully reimagined to suit your dog. The selection ranges from British biscuits and Belgian waffles to American brownies, Parisian macarons, Russian pryanik and even Italian pizza. It is most probably the tastiest cookbook not for human consumption. All of it is, thanks to Ashton’s extensive experience as both a human and small-animal nutritionist, with each meal optimised for canine health.

“I needed a dose of positivity and this idea felt perfect,” Ashton says. “I also wanted to share this happy feeling with people who’d use the recipes and create beautiful and delicious treats for their pooches.”

The production was, of course, very different from her last book.

“It became a one-woman operation due to the current situation,” she explains, “I developed, styled and photographed the recipes, created the cover and designed the entire book. I think it’s very special. Not only because it my ‘paper baby’, but because it’s different from most dog cookbooks out there.”

“Beyond the doughnut: 30 treats & meals your dog will love” by Natalia Ashton (Chiot Publishing, £34.99) is out now. It is also available on Kindle (£11.99).
